Nearest Railway Station and Airport to Kaziranga National Park

Introduction

Kaziranga National Park is the home of the one-horned rhino, and it sits in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of Assam. The park does not have its own airport or railway station. So before you book tickets, you need to know which airport and station are closest, and how to cover the last stretch by road.

This guide gives you the exact picture: nearest railway station, nearest airport, distances, travel time, and the easiest way to reach Kohora, the main gate of the park.

Nearest Railway Station to Kaziranga National Park

The nearest railway station to Kaziranga is Furkating Junction (code FKG). It is about 85 km from the park, and the drive takes around two hours depending on traffic and road work.

Furkating is on the main line of Northeast Frontier Railway. Trains from Guwahati, Dibrugarh, Dimapur, Jorhat, Kolkata (Howrah) and Delhi stop here, so it works well for most travellers coming from other states.

There is no direct train that goes right up to Kaziranga National Park. After you get down at Furkating, you take a taxi or a local bus to Kohora. Taxis wait outside the station, but it is safer to book your pickup in advance, especially if your train arrives early in the morning or late at night.

Other Railway Stations Near Kaziranga

Guwahati Railway Station is the biggest and best-connected station in Northeast India. It is around 203 km from the park (different sources give different numbers because of route choice). The road journey takes about 4 to 4.5 hours. Many travellers prefer Guwahati because more trains run here, and tickets are easier to get.

Jorhat Railway Station is roughly 101 km away. It is a good option if you are coming from the upper Assam side or combining Kaziranga with Majuli or Sivasagar.

Helem station is closer on the map, but it has very few trains, so it is not a practical choice for most people.

Nearest Airport to Kaziranga National Park

The nearest airport to Kaziranga is Jorhat Airport, also called Rowriah Airport (JRH). The distance is about 102 km, and the drive usually takes 2 to 2.5 hours. Flights to Jorhat come mainly from Guwahati, Kolkata and a few other cities, and the number of daily flights is limited.

The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 223 km from the park. The drive takes around 4 to 4.5 hours. Guwahati has flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad and many more cities, so most visitors from outside Assam land here.

Tezpur Airport is also about 75 km away, but flight options are very few, so it is rarely used by tourists.

Which Is Better: Guwahati or Jorhat Airport?

If you want the shortest road trip and your flight timing fits, Jorhat saves you around two hours. But flights are fewer and sometimes cost more.

If you want more flight choices, better fares and easy international connections, Guwahati is the safer pick. You can break the journey by staying a night in Guwahati, or head straight to Kaziranga National Park after landing.

A simple rule: pick Jorhat for comfort and time, pick Guwahati for options and budget.

How to Reach Kaziranga from the Station or Airport

A taxi is the most comfortable option. Private cabs and shared cars run from Guwahati, Jorhat and Furkating to Kohora. If you are travelling as a family or group, a pre-booked taxi is usually the best choice because it is flexible and you can stop on the way.

The bus is the cheapest option. Buses run on NH-37 (now often called NH-715 on some stretches) between Guwahati, Jorhat and Kohora. Timing is not fixed, so check the schedule a day before. Kohora has a bus stop very close to the park gate.

Self-drive is possible if you rent a car in Guwahati or Jorhat. The highway is good, but cattle and slow trucks can reduce speed, so keep extra time in hand.

Many travellers also choose a ready Kaziranga package that includes pickup from the airport or station, stay and jungle safari. This removes the stress of arranging transport yourself.

Best Way to Plan Your Route

From Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru, fly into Guwahati, then go by road to Kaziranga National Park. From Kolkata, you can fly to Jorhat or take a train to Furkating. If you are already in Assam, a daytime bus or taxi from Guwahati is enough.

Try to reach Kohora by afternoon, so you can rest and be ready for the early morning safari. Safari slots are generally in the morning and afternoon, and both need advance planning.

Best Time to Visit Kaziranga National Park

The park is open from October to April. This is the dry season, and animal sightings are at their best. The park stays closed in the monsoon months because of flooding. Winter mornings can be foggy, which sometimes delays flights and trains, so keep a buffer day if your schedule is tight.
