Assam Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah formally inaugurated the reopening on Saturday at the Kohora Range. Forest Department officials, Minister Atul Bora, and MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa were also present at the event.

Kaziranga Reopens With Jeep Safaris and More

Jeep safaris have already resumed in Kaziranga, while elephant safaris will not begin immediately. According to Forest Minister Jayanta Mallabaruah, elephant safaris are expected to restart within the next 10 to 20 days, depending on when the required preparations are completed.

The Assam government is also expecting a rise in tourist arrivals this season. Mallabaruah said that booking trends have been positive and expressed hope that the number of visitors will be higher than last season. Improving the overall tourist experience is another major focus. The Forest Department and Tourism Department will work together to improve infrastructure, upgrade existing facilities, and introduce new attractions as visitor numbers increase.

The government is also planning new tourism circuits connecting Kaziranga with nearby destinations. The aim is to encourage tourists to spend two to four days in the region instead of visiting Kaziranga only for a short stay. These tourism initiatives are also expected to create more opportunities for local communities to earn and take part in tourism-related activities.

Spot Rhinos, Tigers and Elephants

Kaziranga National Park is located along the Brahmaputra River in Assam and extends across the districts of Golaghat, Sonitpur, Biswanath, and Nagaon. The park features a mix of tall elephant grass, wetlands, forests, and several beels, providing suitable habitats for a wide variety of wildlife.

The one-horned rhinoceros remains Kaziranga’s most famous animal and is one of the main attractions for visitors. The park is also home to Asian elephants, wild water buffaloes, swamp deer, tigers, and fishing cats. Kaziranga’s history as a protected area dates back to 1905, when it was established as a reserve forest.

Visitors can explore the park through guided jeep and elephant safaris. Wildlife viewing is also possible from observation towers located at Sohola, Mihimukh, Kathpara, Foliamari, and Harmoti.

The reopening marks more than just the return of tourists. The Forest Minister also highlighted the need to maintain Kaziranga’s ecological balance as tourism continues to grow. Mallabaruah also mentioned government efforts that he said have helped reduce rhino poaching, further strengthening Kaziranga’s position as an important wildlife destination.

There Is More to See Around Kaziranga

The region around Kaziranga now offers visitors more attractions beyond the traditional jungle safari. One of the newer attractions is the Kaziranga National Orchid and Biodiversity Park in Durgapur village. The park has more than 500 species of orchids, along with different varieties of fruits and vegetables, cane, bamboo, and local fish.

For the Assam government, the current goal is to further develop this tourism ecosystem while encouraging visitors to spend more time exploring Kaziranga and the surrounding region.

Kaziranga National Park has reopened for the 2026-27 tourist season, welcoming visitors back to one of Assam’s most famous wildlife destinations.
