Members of its herd reportedly made several attempts to rescue it, but the depth and muddy conditions made it difficult to pull the young elephant to safety.

Tea garden workers and nearby villagers heard the calf’s distress calls and quickly alerted the forest authorities. A rescue team from the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC), led by wildlife veterinarian Bhaskar Choudhury, reached the location and safely lifted the exhausted calf from the trench.

Following the rescue, the calf was taken to the nearest forest beat office for immediate medical attention. Veterinary staff found the animal severely dehydrated and suffering from acute muscular exhaustion after remaining trapped for an extended period. It was given fluids and emergency treatment while its condition was closely monitored.

Wildlife officials initially kept the calf under observation in the hope that its herd would return. Reuniting a rescued elephant calf with its wild family remains the preferred option whenever possible. However, the herd did not return during the monitoring period, making immediate reunification impossible.

The calf was subsequently shifted to the CWRC for specialised rehabilitation and round-the-clock care. It has joined other rescued elephants currently receiving treatment and rehabilitation at the centre.

Wildlife veterinarian Bhaskar Choudhury highlighted the importance of cooperation between local communities, forest officials and wildlife experts during such incidents. The quick response from tea garden workers and villagers played an important role in ensuring that the calf received timely assistance.

The rescue also highlights the challenges faced by wildlife moving through areas located close to human settlements and tea gardens around Kaziranga. Continued coordination between local communities and wildlife authorities remains important for responding quickly when animals become trapped or encounter other dangers.

The elephant calf will remain under specialised care at CWRC while veterinary teams work to stabilise its health and support its long-term rehabilitation. Experts will continue to assess its condition and welfare during the rehabilitation process.

Assam: A four- to six-week-old elephant calf was rescued from a muddy trench at Seconee Tea Estate near Kaziranga National Park after its herd reportedly failed to pull it out….

[233
261,260,256,258,257,163,259
post-1164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-kaziranga-national-park-news","tag-assam-wildlife-rescue-news","tag-elephant-calf-rehabilitation","tag-elephant-calf-rescued-near-kaziranga","tag-elephant-rescued-near-kaziranga","tag-kaziranga-elephant-calf-rescue","tag-kaziranga-national-park-news","tag-kaziranga-wildlife-rescue
["GET
